Leon R.’s Story
Leon R.’s Story

Recovering alcoholic Leon R. had experienced homelessness for more than 20 years when he was approached in 2012 by Step Up’s Outreach team in Griffith Park. For years, he endured cold nights and encounters with snakes and coyotes while sleeping in the hills of the park. Motivated by his friend’s death from alcohol abuse, Leon readily accepted the help from Step Up’s team, including a 20-day detox program, followed by a 90day residential substance abuse program. After treatment, he moved into Step Up on Vine. Leon has been clean and sober for more than six years. He is thriving in his recovery. In 2018, Leon accepted a position at Step Up on Vine as a janitor and garden caretaker. He credits Step Up for believing in him and giving him another chance at life. Leon says, “Step Up gave me my life back and I am here today because of them. My hope in humanity was restored.”.
