Last week was an extremely important one for Step Up as we supported 21 individuals – all of whom have been living on the streets of Hollywood for many years- as they moved into their new home in Michael’s Village.  It was amazing to witness so many people at one time being handed the key to their new home, many of whom had given up hope of housing years ago.  This is a day for us to celebrate and recognize the positive impact we are privileged to have on people’s lives.  We have two tenants yet to move in that we are closely working with I wanted to share with you.  One is Roxanne; she is the #1 person on the Hollywood list who needs housing. Roxanne has set up house for many years in a bus kiosk in Hollywood.  She has been living on the streets in that area for years and our team is working with her to accept supportive housing.  The other is an individual identified by Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky in the neighborhood in which Zev resides, who also has been living for years in a bus kiosk in the Beverly Corrdor.  Our outreach team engaged this gentlemen and are working to bring him into his unit at Michael’s Village.  Both individuals have amassed their belonging in piles where they are sleeping on the street and are very challenging.  But our teams will continue to help them take this next step into housing.

MV DedicationI want to extend my deepest thanks to Aileen, shown above at the Acquisition Celebration.  It was her vision that made Michael’s Village possible and allowed us to complete it through a number of hurdles (remember the dissolution of CRA?).  Her organizations, Gettlove, had five of their clients move into Michael’s Village and of the 23 total tenants, seven are young adults. THANK YOU.

During the lease up process, I was really proud to see all the Step up staff there working together so well as a team; it speaks to who we are as an organization and the sense of belonging and community that is essential to all that we do.  Please join me in savoring this important milestone.  Congratulations to us all!
