We were deeply moved by the Jan. 5 LA Times Op Ed piece “Have you seen my brother standing in the shadows?” written by one of our community partners, Sandra Dusseault.  Not only does Sandra accurately illustrate how a lack of services and the intractable nature of serious mental health issues makes for a bleak scenario, she also reveals in a deeply personal way how the experience is traumatizing to both the loved one and to their family members. Each day at Step Up and Daniel’s Place we see individuals and their family members experiencing similar profoundly difficult and frustrating situations. We believe it is the role of a community to help heal and sustain ALL of these individuals, and to strongly advocate for positive change on their behalf.
