Step Up on Second was founded in 1984 and is one of the premiere models for psychosocial rehabilitation in the country as well as a nationally recognized recovery center for individuals suffering from severe and persistent mental illness. Step Up on Second was created by a woman whose deep love for her mentally ill son caused her to take action. Searching for services and finding very few, she had no choice but to start a center that offered the services she could not find anywhere else. Her vision included a supportive environment with productive activities, from art therapies, job training, coping skills and case management. Family members access help through support groups that meet every month.

What started over 20 years ago in a warehouse shell in Santa Monica is now a thriving community agency serving over 1,200 mentally ill individuals annually and providing 34 permanent housing units on site. Within the next two years, we will expand our permanent housing program to include the addition of a 46 unit apartment complex. This year, Step Up will serve nearly 40,000 hot meals to those who have nowhere else to turn. “As a society, we’ve left the chronically mentally ill out in the dark, but we can improve those lives, we really can.” We have received the Gold Achievement Award, presented by the Hospital and Community Psychiatric Service of the American Psychiatric Association for our work with people with mental illness.
